We at David H Myers Opticians have recently invested in a piece of cutting edge technology that can help us diagnose potential problems with your eyes. This was previously only available in hospitals but we now have 2 available in our Southport and Leeds practices.
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is a special machine that allows us to scan your eye. Previously, we have used retinal cameras that photograph the visible outer layer of your retina. The OCT is like an ultrasound for your eye. It allows us to take the traditional retinal photograph, however now we can also view all the layers of the retina which would not have been visible to your Optometrist previously.
The main benefit of the OCT is that it shows your Optometrist a part of your eye that they wouldn’t normally see. As a result of this, eye diseases can be detected much, much earlier. The OCT also provides a physical record of the health of your eyes in that moment in time. All future scans can then be easily compared and even minor changes or early disease can be detected.
The OCT is a non invasive machine. Your chin is placed on a chin rest like you would have done previously on the camera. Your Optometrist will then get you to look at a target where a scan and photograph will be taken of your eye in a matter of seconds (50,000 scans per second!) This will allow the OCT to take a photograph and also to map out all your retinal layers. The results will appear instantly and your Optometrist can show you and talk you through all the results.
The OCT can detect many eye disease and potential issues. We have listed the most common below.
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Vitreous and Retinal Detachments
- Macular holes and membranes
- Much much more!
Ideally an OCT would be performed for every adult patient at their eye exam. However it is most important if you are over the age of 40, if you suffer from any eye condition or have risk factors that would make you more likely to have an eye condition e.g. direct relative with glaucoma, diabetes etc.
