Lens Types
Lenses
A quality ophthalmic lens is of vital importance to provide the utmost clarity of vision.
Single-vision lenses
The simplest spectacle or contact lens is a single-vision lens, finished to a single prescription to correct a particular eyesight problem. Concave lenses correct myopia, or “short-sightedness,” and convex lenses correct Hypermetropia or “long-sightedness”. Concave lenses are by and large thinner in the middle than they are at the edge and convex lenses are generally thinner at the edge than the centre. The thickness, weight and curvature of the lens will vary with the prescription it is intended to correct.
The lens material will influence the weight and thickness of the lenses, as will the shape and size of the spectacle frame you select. Historically, spectacle lenses were manufactured from glass but these days most lenses are lightweight resins with a wide range of materials available to suit your lifestyle and prescription.
Aspheric lenses and high-index
Should you need high-prescription lenses you can improve the appearance and reduce the weight of your lenses. By using aspheric lens designs and high-index materials lenses can now be made, lighter, thinner and better looking than standard lens types. Aspheric designs that minimise the amount of material make lenses for long sight both thinner and lighter while High-index materials make lenses for short sight thinner.
Bifocal Lenses
Bifocal lenses have two different prescriptons in . The lens of each eye of bifocals consists of a lower and an upper lens. One lens (the bottom one) is made to correct the near vision and enable reading, whereas the other lens (the top one) corrects distance vision. The top lens may not have any type of correction in it, for those who do not have a distance vision problem, but only need vision correction for close objects.

Varifocal Lenses
Varifocals are lenses without any visible lines that are used to correct distance vision, at arms length and close-up viewing. Distance vision is corrected by the upper part of the lens. Vision at arms length (Intermediate Vision) is corrected through the middle part of the lens. and Near vision (reading and close work) is through the lower part of the lens.
Enhance your near vision
Why not make life easier with Occupational or flexible reading glasses?
The latest lens designs allow for the combination of near and intermediate work.

Prescription sunglasses
Irrespective of your prescription, it is vital to protect your eyes from excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Protection is essential to avoid reflected light from snow and sand or if you spend extended periods of time outside, predominantly in the summer. Prescription sunglasses can easily be made with single-vision, bifocal or varifocal designs and offer the full UV protection of non-prescription sunglasses.
Safety and sports glasses
Special frames and lenses which provide eye protection are obtainable for an assortment of recreational and occupational safety uses.
