Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent layer of tissue that covers the surface of the inner eyelid and white part of the eye.
This is most commonly a bacterial infection, which is highly contagious and can be passed on via towels, washcloths or bed linen. It causes a pink, sticky eye with yellowish discharge around the eyelids. This may cause the lids to be stuck together when you wake up.
Conjunctivitis usually clears itself in about a week but medication can be prescribed to help the symptoms. Drops may be obtained from your GP or pharmacist.
