Cataracts

A cataract is when the lens inside the eye becomes hazy and cloudy rather than clear. It is rather like trying to look out of a dirty window, the vision becomes rather blurred and indistinct.

Cataracts are a natural part of the eye's aging process and can begin developing as early as age 40. Four out of five people over 60 develop cataracts, and while it cannot be prevented, proper treatment can minimize and correct visual impairment.

Treatment involves an operation to remove the cloudy lens and a plastic lens is implanted to replace it. This is a very routine operation and is usually done under local anaesthetic meaning you would be allowed home the same day. The operation usually causes the power of your eyes to change and so you would be sent to have your eyes tested about 6 weeks after the surgery.
