Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a natural condition that affects the close-up vision of people over 40 years of age. It is caused when the lenses within the eyes begin to harden and lose their elasticity. This makes focusing on objects close up more difficult.

Presbyopia affects most people around the age of 45 when they will find small print getting harder to read particularly in poor light or when they are tired. People commonly find they need to hold things further away to be able to see them.

This can be treated by reading glasses that are worn whenever they are needed, however they do make the long distance blurry and so must be taken off again to walk around, etc. Bifocals or Varifocals, which are lenses containing both reading and long distance correction may be more convenient in many cases.
